Hollywood Gone Wrong

I got to make a 1000-piece puzzle for ‘Puzzle in a Bag’, entitled ‘Hollywood Gone Wrong’. It was quite a challenge because anyone who knows my style knows that I always go for one story in its most refined form. More than 100 movie references are hidden in this puzzle. Find out what goes wrong in Hollywood once the lights on the movie sets go out.

I started with a longlist of the most famous movies and TV series ever made. From this list, I looked at which popular characters or renowned scenes I could combine with another film. Then I could start planning where all the stories had to take place in the image. “Which recognizable buildings are needed? Does the scene take place in the air or on the water? Which characters should be depicted very large and which ones smaller?” Another challenge was to give every puzzle piece something interesting or recognizable for the puzzlers. Otherwise it would be nearly impossible to make te puzzle.

The puzzle had to be full of references, but I didn't want to lose my typical flat illustration style. In the end this all came together in a huge landscape by layering everything in a top-down perspective.

This was one of the most intensive projects I've ever worked on, but I really love the result.
